Easter Photo Journey

Easter is a time for reflection on the events that happened in Jersusalem nearly 2000 years ago. Some parts of the city haven't changed that much and the following photos show where the events took place.

The walled city of Jerusalem, where Jesus rode down the Mount of Olives and into the city through the Golden Gate on Palm Sunday.

The Golden Gate, where Jesus entered Jerusalem in triumph.  Years later, the gate was blocked up ny the Ottomans to prevent the Messiah ever returning to pass through the gate again:

The Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives, where Jesus was arrested in the night before his crucifixion. Some of the olive trees are thought to date from this period:

The path out of the city where Jesus is thought to have carried his cross to be crucified:

Golgotha - the place of the skull, where it is thought the crucifixion took place. The holes in the cliff look like the eye sockets in a skull. Ironically, there's a bus depot below this cliff, now, where people still travel in and out of the city, much as they must have done then where they would stand to watch and perhaps mock those who were being crucified.

The Garden Tomb, where it is thought Jesus was buried. The tomb is only a short walk from Golgotha, closely matching the gospel accounts. The line of rock just below the door is a groove where the rock covering the door would have been rolled into place.

Emmaus, some seven miles from Jerusalem where the resurrected Jesus broke bread and revealed  what had happened
