Based on the ministry received via Jon on on Sunday January 10 from 1Corinthians 1:10-17, here are some suggested questions for use in your Small Group discussions;

Ice Breaker

  • Has anyone ever knitted anything for you? What was it?

  • What harm can denominations cause? What purpose can denominations serve?
    • How can we help ensure unity remains between Christian denominations?
      (1Corinthians 3:4-6)
    • What is the basis of Christian unity?
      (1Corinthians 1:13, Galatians 3:26-29, John 17:13-21)
  • It was mentioned on Sunday that this unity doesn’t mean we all will like the same music, wear the same clothes or appreciate the same preachers. Words or phrases to describe these areas where there is no clear Biblical directive (gray areas, if you like) may include Christian Liberty, Matters of Conscience or Adiaphora and may include things like eating meat, political preference, wearing a tie etc.
    • How would you define the difference between really vital matters of first importance and secondary matters?
    • What things would you describe as matters of first and second importance in the Christian life?
    • Are there secondary matters we can be tempted to make or primary importance?
    • What can be the fallout of holding on too tightly to secondary matters?
  • Some might say that 1Corinthians 1:11 speaks of a gossip spreading rumours of arguments and telling tales to Paul.
    • Is this the case? Why?
  • What is your role in encouraging and preserving unity?

Further Reading

If you have time and want some further reading, read 1John 2:15-24.

Verse 19; They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.

  • Do you think this is  ‘Christ divided’ or is it something else?
  • Is it possible to be a member of a church but not a member of the Body of Christ?
  • What might be the signs that someone is a member of the Body of Christ?
