BETTER Sunday Teaching

For generations and generations, the people of God were locked into a system of sacrificial offerings and strivings... Their whole lives revolving around these traditions and rituals to keep themselves pure, or to atone for themselves when they could not.

Imagine waking every morning wondering whether you had done enough.
Was your life clean enough?
Had you offered enough?
Had you failed without even realising it?

The whole standing with God, their very relationship with Him depended on this complex system of standards to keep and sacrifices to make. Just an exacting and exhausting way to live.

Into that world, this anonymous letter begins to circulate; speaking of a better way, whispering of a better world...

The writer does not hold back - they claim to have discovered a better sacrifice, a better lamb, a better blood, a better High Priest, a better hope, a better way... In Jesus, we are invited into something altogether BETTER!

Just imagine if the God who couldn't know you better couldn't love you any more than He does right now. Right here and now. Right as you are. What could be better than that?!!

The letter is called Hebrews - and it has survived for two thousand years. On Sunday 4th of October, we're starting a new Sunday morning teaching series exploring this brave - and better - new world! Why not join us for the journey?

As the letter paints this picture of a better way - we also get glimpses of something else... this portrait gallery of Jesus reveals more and more of the purpose of His coming, the reason for His arrival! 

So what better way to prepare for Christmas than to ask: what's better because of Jesus? What in the world is better because He came? Because His feet has touched this earth...?
because His lungs have breathed this air...?
because He has seen this world through human eyes... eyes like yours and eyes like mine?

Why settle for less?
Why stay stuck in the past?
Why not break open and break into the better that Jesus came to bring?
 

Oct 4th - BETTER Picture (Heb 1.1-4)

In Jesus, God gives us a better picture - not just words spoken long ago, but a life we can look at and recognise.

Oct 11th - BETTER Nature (Heb 2.5-13) (Communion)

In Jesus, God shows us our better nature - becoming our brother, standing inside our human story.

Oct 18th - BETTER Freedom (Heb 2.14-18) (Baptisms!)

In Jesus, God wins a better freedom - breaking the fear of death by dying our death.

Nov 8th - BETTER Understanding (Heb 2.16-3.6) 

In Jesus, God offers better understanding - a high priest who knows weakness from the inside.

Nov 22nd - BETTER Access (Heb 4.14-5.10)

In Jesus, God opens better access - a way into His presence carved by a human mediator.

Dec 6th - BETTER Judgement (Heb 9)

In Jesus, God brings better judgement - cleansing that comes not from ritual, but from His own blood.
